Description: I searched far and wide for a great song with an anti-consumerism message. Someone had already made a good video of Fight Club with Cake's Comfort Eagle so I scratched that off the list. Then I found this little gem about slavery. It was made for a Half Life machinima, and is a great song despite the fact it was home-made, with no record label or apparent professionalism. And, it fit Fight Club so perfectly with the tone and lyrics. I tried o focus on the little things in this video; the subtle references and shots of products, TV and society that Fight Club is packed with. For the chorus, I used a blemish remover effect to simulate that airbrushed feeling consumerism gives, as if the movie was one big glamour magazine.
I was lucky enough to study Media at Newcastle University and one of our lecturers was in that Fight Club mindset. I learned a lot from him about the superficial nature of realism in the media and the psychological effects media message has on the audience. We were taught how to deconstruct TV, and I still do it. So go study Media, Communication and Cultural Studies at Newcastle if you want to learn stuff like this. And say hi to me when you get there.
